Of Course, You Love It, but Does It Love You Back?

September 2, 2018

My grandmother used to tell me “Of course, you love bread, but bread does not love you back. Don’t touch it!” While giving a slice of that still warm, out of the oven, crusty bread to my cousin. How unfair!

People used pure charcoal for heartburn that diet alone could not help. Some mineral waters helped with digestion. Chamomile tea was in every household. Pharmaceuticals were expensive and only used when all else failed.

But the first rule, always, was to avoid the foods that triggered reactions. So, if spices were a problem, no more spices. Acids? Tomatoes and lemons were not allowed in the kitchen anymore. Warm crusty bread? Not for me. Well… sometimes, I can. Just not every day.

It was simple, and it made sense. It was understood that we were all a little different and that one diet did not fit all. It was also understood that what we could not digest properly was best left alone and forgotten.

Listen to your body. It knows what is best. Eat what feels good. Do not eat what doesn’t. And know what you are eating. Read your labels.

You would not dream of putting the wrong oil in your car. The wrong gas. The wrong antifreeze. Your car is an investment. You treat it right and give it what it needs… Is your body worth less than your car?
